Speed Reading The Net

Speed Reading Basics

If you learn anything from this site take the following key elements away.

  1. Slow readers read one word at a time.

  2. Speed Readers see 2 or more words during each eye fixation.

  3. Reading slowly does not improve comprehension.

  4. You are able to have better comprehension as a speed reader because you are more intensely focused on what you are reading.

  5. Speed Reading is a skill.  If you don't practice, your skill will diminish.

  6. Just about everyone has the ability to become a speed reader.

  7. Some people use their finger as a pacer to help pull their eyes down the page at a set rate.

  8. Using a pacer is not required to be a speed reader.  If you have the ability to pace yourself without a pacer even better!

  9. You will not be able to read all text at the same speed.  The speed at which you read is dependent on your familiarity with the text, and your vocabulary in relation to the text.  If you are an engineer and are trying to read a mecial journal you will need to slow down (and perhaps even look up words).

  10. You can become a speed reader, I did!
