Vocabulary is key to speed reading

Here is something that not everyone recognizes.  No matter how quickly you can read if you don't understand the words you are reading your comprehension rate will be deminished. 

Makes sense right!

Without a sufficient vocabulary for the information you are reading your comprehension rate will be hindered.  This is why topic or reading selection familiarity is important.  For example if you are an electrical engineer and are reading a paper on botany many of the words you will encounter will be unknown.  Even though you are well education with a high vocabulary your familiarity with botanical terms would most likely be small.

You will be forced to stop during your reading of this selection to look up the botanical words so that you can get the meaning from the text.

Now if that same electrical engineer was reading a paper on a subject he is familiar with in the realm of electrical engineering he may not need to stop at all.
